Many learners believe:

“The more correct my French is, the more natural it will sound.”

But that is not always true.

In reality, the French taught in textbooks is often designed to:

  • avoid mistakes
  • avoid awkward social situations
  • protect the learner

👉 Not necessarily to sound natural.

1️⃣ Textbook French is “safe French”

You are taught:

✔️ complete sentences
✔️ very clear structures
✔️ cautious formulations

Why?

Because they are:

  • grammatically safe
  • socially acceptable
  • easy to correct

2️⃣ The problem: nobody really speaks like that

In real life, native speakers:

  • shorten sentences
  • simplify structures
  • swallow words
  • use shortcuts constantly

👉 Not because they speak “badly”.

Because they speak naturally.

3️⃣ The trap advanced learners fall into

The more you try to sound “correct”:

  • the more you control yourself
  • the more you hesitate
  • the more rigid your French becomes

👉 Natural flow disappears under constant self-monitoring.

4️⃣ Real French is simpler than you think

Sometimes:

❌ the textbook sentence sounds artificial
✔️ the natural version is much shorter

Example:

I do not know whether that will be possible.
✔️ I don’t know if that’s gonna work.

French works the same way.

5️⃣ Why this changes everything

Once you understand this:

✔️ you listen differently
✔️ you understand natives more easily
✔️ you simplify your French
✔️ your fluency improves naturally

💎 The shift

The problem is not your level.

👉 The problem is that you may be trying to speak a version of French that even French people no longer use naturally.

⚠️ But be careful…

👉 simplifying your French does not mean speaking incorrectly.

And many learners make the opposite mistake:
trying to sound “too native” too quickly.

I’ll explain why in the next Frenchies.
